ZOONOSIS, a bedroom pop-opera about lifeforms in lockdown
Performed by members of Dublin Youth Theatre
Concept and songs by Cal Folger Day
Recordings co-produced by Phil Christie
Original production directed by Tom Creed
"The earth is healing"
In spring 2020, our cast (14 young people, aged 15-22) interviewed friends and family about their experiences during the pandemic, and a strong focus emerged on relationships with non-human residents of the planet: pets at home, plants where we walk, wild species moving into unpeopled city centers. The spoken excerpts you hear are from those interviews. The lyrics of the songs reflect an investigation into that theme, a research rabbithole about the language we use to talk about nature and the history of the environmental movement.
The show we made exists as a website, which we invite you to experience at
www.ZOONOSIS.ie -- there is a sequence of videos as well as clickable links to sources and related material. The rehearsal, development, and recording process was almost entirely conducted remotely from our homes via phones and laptops.
Half of the profits from sales of this album go directly to Dublin Youth Theatre to support their ongoing work in providing a performance arts education to young people. Please consider an additional donation here:
